Ideas Development: Sketches

Image
Out of the six different building design ideas I have drawn, I chose one I was most comfortable with and tried to finalize it. I liked the idea of the upside down petals, I also really wanted the building to be a dome shape as well. I sketched out different ideas I thought of again before settling on one I thought of the dome shaped building and the flower petals as two separate entities to put together which I think will be useful when making my 3D model I ended up not liking this drawing so I will continue to develop my ideas more

Ideas Development : Initial sketches

Image
After my tutorial session, I continued to sketch some more building design ideas. My tutor gave me advice on looking at my inspiration ( the protea flower ) at different angles and cuts. For reference, this is how the protea flower looks:    I initially started by taking the flower in its natural form. The main thing I wanted to implement the round, dome shape that the centre of the flower has on to my design       Then I tried imagining it upside down as well, mainly focusing on the petals as all or part of the building. The main thing I struggled with was envisioning it as a functioning building, namely door and window positions. It is a theatre so it may not need as much windows but I also tried sketching the entrance separate from the building and not in the centre. This way it could maybe lead to a lounge or a bar before the actual theatre hall. I also tried taking the individual petals and putting them together, also implementing a separate kind of door en...

Art Portfolio ONE : Project sign off

In week 3, I had my tutorial and project sign off. Along with my tutor, we discussed the elements of the 2D outcomes I had to produce which will be 2 elevations, 1 section, 2 concept sketches and a site map. We also discussed the function of my building and the location. I was not yet sure of the location and materials for my building so I was tasked with figuring that out which I have done now. We also discussed how the development of the building ideas was going and he also gave me some work to do on that. I will sketch the final building design I have chosen next and will begin designing my 2D outcomes. Here is the link to my project sign off sheet

Art Portfolio ONE: Project Statement

For my AP1 project as an architecture student I will create six 2D building designs and one physical 3D outcome. My theme is primitivism and it will be aimed at middle aged adults (millennials/generation X) taking inspiration from the Protea flower of South Africa. The design will be of a concert/theatre hall centred on African traditional performances with the purpose of  preserving and sharing the history of performing arts in Africa. I will develop the building through a mixture of hand and digital drawings followed by a 3D model work after discussing the materials and methods with my tutor. The project will be done in a six week time frame and will be completed by the end of May. The portfolio of outcomes will be presented of my website. I am thinking of these artists to research; Mpethi Morojele (MMA Design Studio) - National Baha'i House of Worship Mick Pearce- Eastgate Centre David Adjaye Mariam Kamara ZAV Architects

Developing Ideas (The Object Lesson)

Image
For this session we were asked to pick an object from a box and try to develop new ideas based on what we comes to our mind when viewing the object. The object I chose is what appears to be a perfume bottle. I started by writing down everything that came to my mind when holding and looking at the bottle. The texture of the bottle was a bumpy and it was a round shape and the first thing that I thought of was how a pumpkin looked so I drew that. I then developed he drawing to make it look more like a building structure. I also tried to incorporate the original idea of a flower to the drawing as well. I continued  to feel the object and noticed it has a glass or glass-like material that it was made out of which made me realize that I hadn't given proper thought to the materials and sustainability aspect that I will have to eventually work on so I began to research building materials that were specifically useful for round buildings. I got the usual materials such as glass, concrete an...

Initial Ideas (Crazy Eights)

Image
After looking at the project brief of the three themes (Primitivism, pop art, industrial) we were tasked with generating ideas based on our chosen theme. I chose primitivism as my theme as I think it gives me a more creative route and the theme is a bit broader than the rest. I started with creating a mind map I wrote down all the things I associated with the theme such as nature, history, land and so on. This helped me not to think too much on the specifics and to see how many different sections of primitivism I could choose from when creating the final project. After that we did a task called 'Crazy Eights' which required us to draw our ideas and develop them within a set time frame as it was supposed to be just a quick sketch of what we were thinking about regarding the project at the time. We folded our paper to get eight different sections for our sketches       I initially thought of African huts so I drew that first then i started to develop on that idea. I thought...

First Thoughts

After going through the brief, I have been able to consider the three themes, primitivism, pop art and industrial.  Primitivism relates to the early stages of humanity. It takes into account early traditional cultures and historical events. It relies a lot on natural resources and how to use the land around us to create pieces. In relation to my progression route, primitivism takes into consideration of earlier architectural forms and materials. For this theme, I will have to take in the element of sustainability and the use of natural and recyclable materials. Primitivism does not only have to rely on culture and old methods but I can also take my inspiration from nature like flowers, animals, the ocean and so on and be able to build up on that. I am most drawn to this theme because it allows me to look back on things that are not common to see nowadays and I can also trace back to the origins of architecture. I also think it will allow me to be more creative with my designs and b...
