Sequential images research
Elliott Erwitt (1928-2023) was a photographer born in Paris to Russian parents who moved to America in 1939. He developed a love for photography and is now known for his black and white candid photos and his love for dogs. I have been learning sequential images in class and have done some research on him. I like him because of how he uses humor in his photographs to show basic human traits.
Sequentially Yours (2011) by Elliot Erwitt
I think this is a funny take on the relationship between a man and his dog. The sequence reverses the roles between man and pet as the man throws a stick in the pond, one would usually expect the dog to have chased after the stick but the third photo shows the dog standing and watching making it seem like his owner was the one who fetched the stick instead. When asked about his love for photographing dogs he states, ''I take a lot of pictures of dogs because I like dogs, because they don’t object to being photographed, and because they don’t ask for prints'' (Erwitt:2021).

This particular image was probably just a random encounter between a man and a dog but to me, Elliot somehow makes it seem like his camera almost predicted the man would have a conversation with the dog at that moment which I find so interesting. “the picture is of course the man talking to the dog—having had his discussion, he goes on his way.” (Erwitt:2011). Elliot is known to use his film sparingly as compared to other photographers as well. He states, “The process is sometimes more interesting than the finished picture,” (Erwitt:2011)

His images always tell a story and capture moments which would seem not so important at the moment but when looked back on shows the peculiar nature of human beings.
