SolarHaven Home: Site/floor plan
Before beginning my floor plan I did some research on the scale of my building since I will be designing a bungalow. I researched the average square footage for the floor plan of a bungalow. The Office of National Statistics (2022) found that the median floor plan for bungalows was 99 square metres which is approximately 1066 square feet and detached bungalows had the highest median floor plan of 136 square metres (1464 square feet). The bungalow I will be designing will be larger than average so I also got some information on the floor plan of larger houses. According to an article by Archimple (2022), what would be considered a big house can go from 2500 square feet up to 5000 square feet on average. For a large 4 bedroom house it would be about 4000 square feet. But a lot depends on the type of house it is, "single-story houses often include more square footage than multi-story dwellings because they have more room for expansion. If there are multiple occupants living in the same home (such as a family), then it is likely that the house will need to accommodate more people and thus be larger" (Archimple, 2022).
This is my final floor plan which I did on HomeByMe and I will explain the process of designing it. The home is 3694 square feet. I started by drawing the exterior walls of the home before adding the rooms. I started with the entryway which will act as the transition from the outside of the house to inside. This is where the shoes used outside are left and changed. The
next room I did was the living room. As you can see in the image above
the living room exhibits an open floor plan. It is the central part of
the interior as it is from the living room that the space flows to the
kitchen and the passage ways leading to the rooms. The kitchen is an
open kitchen as well which will aid interaction and quality time within the family. The kitchen also has a dining for the family to enjoy their meals together and includes a sliding back door which opens unto the back yard
I also added a play area in the living room for the children and whoever is in the living room or the kitchen can watch over them. The next room I did was the home office which is at the end of the house away from all the noise. After that I did the master bedroom for the parents. I did it first before including the bathroom, the average bathroom size for a master bedroom is 40 square feet so I increased my bathroom size a bit. I then did the children's bedrooms (aged 10 and 8). I put it next to the master bedroom making them close to the parents bedroom so it is easier to check up on them. I did a jack and Jill-style bathroom for the children as well. The average bathroom including a shower is 26-31 square feet so I used that to determine the bathroom size. The last room I added was a toilet for guests to use.
I added a garden (front yard and back yard) for the house. The final thing I did was include the doors and windows. Each door and window has measurements which I have stated below:
Front door entrance
Width; 5'1''
height; 8'9"
Back door entrance (double door)
Width; 7'3"
height; 8'9"
Interior doors
Width; 3"
Height; 6'6"
Windows
a) width; 3'5" height from floor; 9'2"
b) width; 3" height from floor; 8'9"
