3D Outcome: Process 1

This post will show the steps taken to achieve my 3D model outcome. My model will be made out of plastic in the model making and plastics workshop. After consulting with the person in charge at the workshop we came to the conclusion that my model will look slightly different than my drawings. The dome will take a rounder shape as opposed to the slightly oval look for my drawings.

I started by creating a template for my petals. I drew a couple of different shapes and sizes just to be on the safe side and cut the pieces out on paper, also making sure they were symmetrical

I then sourced a sheet of white acrylic from the 3D printing and Laser cutting workshop. I then traced out my petals on to the sheet with an ink pen. I arranged then on a straight line as I would be cutting them out later

In the mean time, I had shaped my dome using the vacuum former. I did this by placing the dome I was using for my shape and also a white acrylic sheet on top. I pressed the button and it took about a minute for the sheet to wrap around the object and replicate the shape.

After that, I used the band saw to cut out my shapes and the sander to smoothen and polish the edges of my petals, especially the curves

After that was done, I placed the parts in the oven for it to heat. Once it had heated, it became more flexible making it easy for me to manipulate. I used round shaped objects to get the curve and then with my gloved hand, I bent the top part of the plastic in order for it to mimic an open petal like on my design. I repeated this process for each one.

I then drilled a hole at the top of my dome to represent my skylight. I used the had drill and made little holes around and then used a round file to smoothen the rough parts and make the shape round.

At this point I had my basic shapes so it was time for me to join them. I used the hot glue gun to attach the parts together. It was a bit difficult to do as it would not stick some times but I was able to get it done eventually.

After that I started to work on the windows, I repeated the process for the petals but this time with a clear acrylic sheet as shown here

I followed the same process of putting them in the oven and then bending them to my liking. I then glued the clear pieces to the white ones. This process was hard as the glue would sometimes stain the clear acrylic and as much as I tried to hide the traces of glue, there were some small parts that I couldn't avoid it showing

After this the basic shape of my building was done and it was time for me to add the details of my environment
