When looking back at my final sketch, I did not like the design for the dome so this post will explore me figuring out a way to redesign the dome.
This is my design idea, for the dome, the spaces are supposed to serve as glass windows that will let in light. I don't like the concept of everything being glass. The deign is also a theatre therefore I don't think it is needed for it to be that bright inside so I will explore some other ideas for this.
On my first design sheet, I looked at was the round reading room at the British museum and tried to imitate it. I also looked at geodesic domes using a hexagon as my shape for the windows. Taking inspiration from that shape I also tried another design using a star in the middle and diamond shapes for the windows.
I was then reminded of my initial idea that I had not worked upon which involved Ankara fabric patterns. I experimented with different patterns I was familiar with in my culture, also drawing how it might look from the top.

I tried to look at how other artists have applied this pattern in their work such as Yinka Shonibare. Yinka Shonibare is a British-Nigerian artists whose works explore colonialism, cultural identity, race and so on. He is mainly known for his sculptures which utilizes different patterns of Ankara fabric. In order to gain more inspiration from him I went to the DMU library and found a book about him. The book I read was called Double Dress.
The book included some of his exhibition work and writings about them and the inspiration. What caught my eye was a set of paintings he did. On page 45 and 46, there was a picture of 55 canvases which showed different patterned prints he had done
Double Dutch by Yinka Shonibare (1994)
From these, I selected some of the designs and tried to draw them as windows/ where light would enter at the dome of my building
I then sketched my building again replacing the design of the dome with one of the ankara patterns I sketched
However, when transferring this to my digital drawing I did not like the way it looked. I also tried different designs digitally but it was not compatible. Nevertheless, looking at Yinka Shonibare's work gave me inspiration for my design even if I ended up not using it
Good post, Aaeesha, showing how you are sourcing your inspiration for the design has worked well here. However, I think you need to identify whether or not you are going to use this inspiration in your design - follow up with a post on your completed design.
