3D Prototype and feedback

I worked on creating a 3D version of my design and exploring other versions in 3D aswell. I used cardboard to create these works

For the first prototype, I started by cutting out the pieces for the first floor of the building

I then glued the pieces together making sure to curve the edges of the left side like I had dome in my drawing

At this point the first floor was done so I started working on the second one. I glued the parts directly onto the first block I made using the same process

I then assembled the parts for the roof. As it is an overhanging roof I was careful with the measurements so it could meet at an angle aswell

This is the final result of the prototype:

I created two more prototypes after this

The second one was from my ideas of having the second floor overhang and also having a curved roof

The third prototype came from the idea of stacking the books in a misaligned order

I personally prefer the first one but for primary research I created a google form in order to get feedback on the designs and here are the results of the form:

These answers are for the second model I did, the one with a curved roof

Every respondent said they liked the design so that is something good. When asked about the practicality of the design majority said it was practical while minority said they were not sure so that is something I will have to take note of

The next set of answers are for the very first model I worked on in this post

This one had very positive feedback, everyone liked the design and also thought it was practical

The third set of answers is for the final model I showed

This one had more negative feedback, although I expected it. Everyone thought the design could be improved which shows they weren't really moved by it. Majority was also not sure of its practicality and some even said it was not practical at all. I think this is sufficient feedback to rule out the third model completely

Next, I asked which design were people's favourite

This one was a split decision between the fist and second design but I personally prefer the first model I did so I that design comes down to me

I included in my description on the form the inspiration for the design so for the next question I asked which design looks most inspired by stacked books

Based on the responses, they thought the second design (which is the first model) looked closer to the inspiration followed by the third design and finally the first design (the second model)

Lastly, I asked for any additional information on what they would change or add to any of the designs

Most people said they wouldn't change anything while one said they like the slanted roof on one of my models.

This form was beneficial to get opinions and advice outside of my own which could positively affect the development of my project

  1. Would have preferred to have seen this over two posts - the prototyping is very descriptive and doesn't say much about what you were trying to achieve in terms of working from your 2D designs and there is not much in the way of reflection on the survey or how it might alter how you approach your project.
