Design development: Concept drawing

After deciding on my design I started to practice the concept drawing. While attempting the concept drawing I tried looking at different things I could further develop or change with it. Because my idea was gotten from the stacking of books I got physical books, stacked them in different ways and took pictures as them for inspiration not only for development but for help with perspective when creating the concept drawing.

This was the initial drawing I had developed from my initial ideas

I then stacked the books in a different structure. The use of the three book where the one in the middle goes inward made me think of an overhanging roof where the second floor of the building is also placed inward, on top of the first floor and that was what inspired my next drawing

The inspiration for the second drawing is quite similar to the one before but this time I worked with it only have two stacked books and removed the idea of the overhanging roof. The idea was for the second floor to offset within the building, so it is positioned in a way that it does not align directly above the first floor.

For this design, I thought of if a page of the book was folded upwards and that is what inspired the detail on the roof

I decided to colour these drawings using pro markers to practice for my final concept drawing

For this drawing I made the decision to extend the glass windows to the top. The cream colour represents the wood facade and the blue is the glass windows/door. I was not sure if I should've completely covered the ground with grass or not and I also didn't properly draw the sky so I decided against it for my remaining drawings

For this drawing I used the grid lines to place the grass, I got rid of the sky and the colours for the tree. I do think I could take more care in the colour application for the roof and the colouring for the windows/ doors is too harsh

This final drawing was the one I preferred the most and will be the reference used when creating my concept drawing

  1. Good, crisp drawings of your concept, particularly the black and white sketches. Maybe experiment with other materials for adding colour aside from Pro Markers - watercolour or coloured pencils might work better.
