3D Model Making Process

This post will detail the process of me making my 3D model. After completing my 2D outcomes, I began work on my model as the workshops were not open I took the initiative of sourcing my own material and working by hand in the studio. The materials I used for my model was Basswood and transparent plastic acrylic.

I purchased twelve pieces of already cut basswood sheets from amazon. I chose to use basswood as it is a very soft and light wood making it easy for me to cut it with only a ruler and knife cutter. The colour is also similar to that of white oak wood which is the material of my building.

I started by drawing lines with 0.5cm space between them in order to cut them out. This would represent the wood cladding of my building

I divided the wood into two so I could have two batches. I then cut out the pieces using a knife cutter on top of the cutting mat

After that, I glued the pieces together and repeated the same process with a longer measurement for the sides of the building.

Once I had assembled my wood pieces, I went to the 3D printing workshop to get a transparent plastic acrylic sheet. I checked by the plastics workshop but the instructor wasn't around, luckily, the instructor for the wood workshop allowed me to use the band saw machine to cut the acrylic. I measured and drew the parts I wanted to cut out and using the machine, I was able to cut the pieces I needed. These pieces represent the glass windows and openings.

I then glued the cut pieces together with a hot glue gun.

Once I finally had all the parts that I needed I began assembling the first floor of the building. Using one of the basswood sheets as the base

Once the first floor was done, I began work on the second floor. The second floor is not the same size as the first as it is shorter in length so I repeated the process of cutting the pieces of wood only with a shorter length this time.

After that, I worked on putting the pieces for the second floor together.

At this point I had successfully made my two floors and all that was left was to make the roof. I started by cutting the template pieces for the roof. As it is a slanting roof, I made sure to cut the pieces at an angle.

I then glued those pieces to the top of the second floor

To get the curve of the roof, I did this by using a steaming method. I boiled water in a pot until it was very hot and enough steam was coming out. I then hovered the corner of the wood over the pot. As basswood is a form of softwood all I needed was for the moisture to soften it up more in order to bend it. I gently bend the wood with my hand as it got softer in order to get the curve.

Finally, I glued the last piece of my roof, finishing my model

The last thing to do was to create my building environment. I did this using pva glue and artificial grass. Here is the final product:
