SolarHaven Home : Process & final outcome

Image
Now that I have my floor plan, I am now ready to create the house in 3D. The software that I will be using is sketchup I started by opening the app and selecting 'create new' and set my scale to feet and inches. I was giving a blank canvas to work with   I then deleted the scale figure and transferred the dimensions of my floor plan using the line tool. I also went 'scenes' in the right hand panel and clicked on the plan view. I did this so I could see my drawing from the top. I followed the red, blue and green axis lines in order for my lines to be straight. Sketchup automatically fills up your drawing once the lines are connected       After that I clicked on the 'offset' tool and pulled it in to give my wall its thickness         I needed to give my wall an opening for the interior so I right clicked on the middle then selected 'erase'.        I proceeded to select the 'push/pull' tool which allowed me to set my wall height....

SolarHaven Home: Site/floor plan

Image
Before beginning my floor plan I did some research on the scale of my building since I will be designing a bungalow. I researched the average square footage for the floor plan of a bungalow. The Office of National Statistics (2022) found that the median floor plan for bungalows was 99 square metres which is approximately 1066 square feet and detached bungalows had the highest median floor plan of 136 square metres (1464 square feet). The bungalow I will be designing will be larger than average so I also got some information on the floor plan of larger houses. According to an article by Archimple (2022), what would be considered a big house can go from 2500 square feet up to 5000 square feet on average. For a large 4 bedroom house it would be about 4000 square feet. But a lot depends on the type of house it is, "single-story houses often include more square footage than multi-story dwellings because they have more room for expansion. If there are multiple occupants living in the ...

Initial research: Target market/ ideal customer

People belonging to Generation X ( 1965-1980), although a small group, can be at various stages in their lives ranging from having a family/raising children, being single or in relationships but one thing that they have in common is that they are at the stage in their life where they are most likely already home owners. Based on a report done by the National Association of Realtors. In 2023, Generation X was the generation with the highest number of houses purchased. The graph below shows this.   Age of Home Buyers (2023)   My design is targeted at Generation X because they are more financially stable as they are in the peak of their careers and most likely have earned enough to finally own their own building. This generation also experienced the great recession, the housing crash and other unstable economic conditions and are therefore more careful with their financial decisions. This also adds to the fact that when Generation X purchase a house they do not intend to move resi...

Website Research: Kunle Adeyemi & Michael Maltzan

Image
Based on my project, I will be looking at two Architects websites; Kunle Adeyemi & Michael Maltzan. I will be looking at the website and how easily accessible and functional it is for users and how their work is displayed. This website research will assist me in understanding how to create my own website so I will consider the overall design, colours and typography, navigation, usability/ user friendliness, links and mobile view.  The first website I will be looking is Kunle Adeyemi website . I started with the homepage. It clearly stated his name and his occupation and included a picture of him and a biography as well. It states that he is an architect and founder of his own firm and also talks about his most notable works, awards he has won and also his vision towards architecture in Africa.  The homepage has a white background with clear text and headings and also includes a navigation menu which links to other pages. I scrolled down to the foote...

Research Post: 'The Quest' by Ström Architects

Image
In this post I will be researching a building done by Ström Architects, an architectural firm that focuses on creating modern and luxurious buildings mainly in residential architecture. The building I will be looking at is known as 'The Quest'   'The Quest' (2015) by Ström Architects This is a private residence located in the UK, the clients were a couple with an interest in modern art and they were looking for a home they could retire to. The home was built to replace a bungalow that had been there since the 1900's. According to Ström Architects (2014),  "The clients are in their seventies and wanted a comfortable house without internal stairs, a single-storey house was therefore something that we quickly established as a real benefit." This request also made them establish an open plan living area within the house and also fulfilled the clients request for an accessible home for their children and grandchildren. The shape of the house also helped with ...

Research Post: Abijo Mosque by PWDC

Image
In this piece of research, I will be looking at the design of the Abijo Mosque in Lagos, Nigeria done by Patrickwaheed Design Consultancy (PWDC). The building takes it's name from the location and was a donation to the Abijo community through an organization called 'Crescent Bearers' in order to promote religious, social and cultural community centered activities.   Abijo Mosque (2020) by Patrickwaheed Design Consultancy   The buildings style is of contemporary architecture while also combining some geometric elements in its structure. It also takes inspiration from traditional Yoruba mud buildings as a way to reflect on the culture and environment of the people. The building can be entered from three different sides and there is a mezzanine floor level with a separate entrance for the female worshippers. In order to accommodate more worshippers, the north, south and west walls feature openings with sliding doors which extend the prayer hall. The sliding doors are also ...

Today we are practicing making presentation boards for a gallery in Wix for our final portfolio. I began by opening Photoshop I proceeded to click on File and then clicked on New. A dialog box appeared and I clicked on the Print section and selected "A3" size for my canvas and I used a 300ppi. I also selected a landscape orientation and left my background as a white colour. I clicked create and my white canvas appeared on my workspace. Next, I selected the text tool in the left hand menu and clicked unto my canvas. I then wrote my title, selected the text, and used my top menu to change the font to Garamond and the size to 60pts. I then went back to the move tool in the left hand menu and moved the text to align how I wanted it to the left. I then went back to my text tool and wrote my sub title, selected the text and used my top menu again to select the Garamond font and change the font size to 36pts. I then went back to my move tool, selected my text and using the grid line...
