Design Boards: Process

Image
This post will show the steps taken to create my design boards for my portfolio. This is for my materials and sustainability board. I created my boards using Photoshop. I started by opening a blank canvas of A4 sheet size and in landscape orientation I then placed a background design that I got from Pexels on to the sheet. I did this by selecting my background image, clicking on 'Edit' then on 'Copy', then went to my blank canvas and clicked on 'paste'. This will be the background for my writings and images for my design boards   I then typed the name of my project, Floralis Hall, in the font style 'minion pro' and a font size of 48. I also remembered to add my logo design from last term so I copied and pasted it on my canvas as well After that I wrote the title of my design board which was materials and sustainability. This was in the same font to show consistency and in font size 30 I then started to add my image and writings as well. I selected an ima...

Further Research- Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

This post will focus on highlighting the purpose of my building and connecting it to a building I have researched   Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture by David Adjaye (2016) This museum was creating in order to recognize the long struggle of African Americans and to document their culture, struggles and contributions and the role they played in American history. The museum houses different galleries, exhibitions and collections centered around the history and stories of the enslaved. The building takes inspiration from the 'corona', crown of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, using a bronze coloured aluminium framework it does a great work of letting light in to define the space. "The entire building is wrapped in an ornamental bronze lattice that is a historical reference to African American craftsmanship. The density of the pattern can be modulated to control the amount of sunlight and transparency into the interior." (ArchDaily, 2019) I ...

3D Outcome: Process 2

Image
This post will show the continued process of making my 3D model and the final outcome. To create the steps leading up to my building I made templates for the shape using paper first. I used a material known as grey foam to make the steps. I traced out the shape on to a block of grey foam and then used the hot wire tool to cut out the shape. The shape isn't as perfect as I would've wanted it to be and the process wasn't smooth as the wire snapped off at a point but I was able to make the steps.     I also stopped by the wood workshop to cut a 470mm by 500mm board for the base of my building Since I wanted a white model I decided to paint the steps white as well and then glued them together, before glueing them to the board. I used PVA glue for this After that I traced out my path leading to the building and began to paint it. I used masking tape to avoid painting over the line Finally, I glued the fake grass I had ordered from Amazon on to the remaining space on my board. I ...

3D Outcome: Process 1

Image
This post will show the steps taken to achieve my 3D model outcome. My model will be made out of plastic in the model making and plastics workshop. After consulting with the person in charge at the workshop we came to the conclusion that my model will look slightly different than my drawings. The dome will take a rounder shape as opposed to the slightly oval look for my drawings. I started by creating a template for my petals. I drew a couple of different shapes and sizes just to be on the safe side and cut the pieces out on paper, also making sure they were symmetrical I then sourced a sheet of white acrylic from the 3D printing and Laser cutting workshop. I then traced out my petals on to the sheet with an ink pen. I arranged then on a straight line as I would be cutting them out later  In the mean time, I had shaped my dome using the vacuum former. I did this by placing the dome I was using for my shape and also a white acrylic sheet on top. I pressed the button and it took abou...
